NLP training is a very organized and systematic process of understanding the cause of our actions and behaviors. Why do we behave the way we do and how can we change our thinking, actions, and beliefs which will help us lead a very blissful and purposeful life.
Human beings are the only species on Earth which has the power to think, choose and correct their actions. NLP training helps us come out of the reactive mode and empowers us to respond to situations in the best possible manner.
At SecretSifu, I have always talked about ‘mind over body’ philosophy. If we become the masters of our thought and emotions, we can create and live the life that we have always dreamed of. My quest ( to provide my readers with all the resources and knowledge to lead a better life) lead me to NLP training.
You must check out our first article on Neuro Linguistic Programming to make most of this learning series.
In this part of the series, we will discuss some of the very fundamental principles of the NLP training.
NLP training: The Map is not the Territory
As the title suggests, the map cannot be the actual territory. It is the representation of the actual territory. Each of us carries a unique map with which we see the world.
Let me explain you the concept with the game I played in my Theater classes.
Our teacher would divide us into teams. 3-4 students from each team would become an object or animal using various props ( see image below). Then the next group of students would come blindfolded and guess the object by touching. It was interesting to see the different answers that would emerge.

The difference in the answers was because of the way different people perceived the reality.
This is the essence of ‘map is not the territory’ philosophy. There exists a striking difference between our beliefs( and our perception of the world) and the reality.
Our values and beliefs form the neural pattern which constructs the internal map using which we navigate through the world. This is where NLP training comes into the picture. It helps align our map to the actual territory as closely as possible.

Map and Territory application in real life
There is a brilliant illustration of this philosophy in action listed in the NLPLS’ article. A person who is suffering from lack of self-confidence say in public speaking area, might create a map about lack of self-confidence in that field(public speaking). Now, our mind re-uses this map in other areas of life. Thus, the person feels that he/she lacks confidence in whatever they do.
Now, our mind re-uses this map in other areas of life. Thus, the person feels that he/she lacks confidence in whatever they do.
It is not that the person may not be good in other areas of life. It is just that the map had deleted all the references to experiences where the person might have shown signs of confidence.
When I read about this concept, I realized that I too have been using a wrong map.
During my childhood, I used to give too much importance to other’s opinion about me. I would do things which my folks would appreciate and never try anything which would cause them to raise their eyebrows.
I had been unintentionally carrying this map until now. This is when I took to writing. Slowly, I have been making changes to my map which has allowed me to see the world in a whole new perspective.
NLP training makes us aware that we are using a mismatched map for our territory. It brings to light, how the wrong maps lead to maligned thoughts and hurtful feelings.
NLP Training: The truth behind Experience
It is not the experience that shapes our life but the meaning we derive out of it that actually does.
Meanings create a behavioral pattern that governs our actions. For example here is a story of two brothers whose father was a drunkard. The father would spend almost all his money on drinking. This what the two boys saw their father do for their entire childhood.
For example here is a story of two brothers whose father was a drunkard. The father would spend almost all his money on drinking. This is what the two boys saw their father do for their entire childhood.
The two boys grew into adults. One of them became a drunkard like his father and the other educated people about alcohol abuse. When both were questioned about their life choices, they answered, “Well because of my Dad.”
While most of us break down on adversity, some of us choose to fight back. Almost all of the success stories are full of chapters that are covered with hardships, tears, and challenges. The meaning you derive out of your experience will determine your future.
Do you take your failures as a warning and stop or do you wear it like a battle scar and go ahead to win the battle.
NLP training: Emotional State Cycle
We are creatures living in different emotional states. You would be surprised if you start noting down the emotional state transitions you make as you progress through the day.
Many of us believe that we are in control of our emotions.
Let me take you through a simple exercise that will highlight the emotional volatility.
Read the steps below then carry out as advised with your eyes closed.
- Think of a very pleasant memory that you have experienced in the recent months. The details should be fresh enough for you to visualize the event. Think about the expression on your face, the people around you. Recall the sound, smell and other various details that you can associate with the event.
- Now pin down the top 5 words that best describe the event.
- Now with your eyes closed, think about a negative incident that shook your life. Briefly, recall the emotions, thoughts, and feelings that you associated with that event.
- Pin down the top five words that best describe the emotions.
If you were committed to the above exercise as advised then the difference in emotions will be evident.
Did you notice how easy it is to sway away from a positive emotional state to a negative one? You might argue that the difference in the feelings resulted because of the situations I had asked you to visualize.
This exactly is my point. We are very easily provoked to jump from one emotional state to another. A one moment we are happy, humming a song while driving and just a second later when a car cuts speedily in front of us, we get irritated.
We are very easily provoked to jump from one emotional state to another. One moment we are happy, humming a song while driving and just a second later when a car cuts speedily in front of us, we get irritated.
The continuous transitions throughout the day leave us emotionally exhausted and at times emotionally unavailable for the people that matter in our lives.
Needless to say that the more time we spend in negative states, the more emotionally drained we feel. Negative states sap the motivation to move forward and your ability to take right decisions.
This is where NLP training will come to aid. It helps us come out of negative states and shifts our base to a positive emotional state. States like peace, gratitude, blissfulness, and love are empowering not just for ourselves but to anyone who comes in contact with us.
This plays a major role in improving interpersonal relations and to coming peace with yourself.
